Famous Qur’an reciter Ahmad Sulaiman Ibrahim has defended his decision to pray for the success of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 elections.
Ibrahim, who was appointed as a commissioner by Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in December 2021, took to his Facebook page on Wednesday to reply critics.
He wondered why the same people didn’t challenge him when he did the same for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
Below is a translation of the posting by Ahmad Suleiman Ibrahim:
Questions to those challenging me for praying for the success of Alh Atiku Abubakar, Wazirin Adamawa, in becoming Nigeria’s president in 2023:
Is it an offence to pray for a fellow Muslim beseeching the Almighty Allah to make him president if he is the best for us?
Is it an offence to pray to Almighty Allah to give him the strength to repair our country Nigeria?
Is it an offence to pray to Almighty Allah not to leave him to his devices but guide him to what is right?
And is it an offence to say my opinion about him?
In 2015, I prayed for General Muhammadu Buhari, why didn’t anyone say anything? I even attended Buhari’s rally.
Buhari and Atiku are both Muslims, and my fellow Northerners.
Only the stark illiterate will think a cleric cannot participate in politics.
And if you want to draw someone’s attention to what you think is wrong, is it in the public space that you should do that? Or are you expected to do that in private?
I am also a citizen with full rights just like any other citizen
Lastly, I pray to Almighty Allah to restore peace and prosperity to our country. May He also ease our hardships caused by high cost of living.
