DG of NBC Mallam Balarabe Shehu Ilelah said the visit was in line with stakeholders’ consultation to ensure a smooth switch from analog to digital technology in the broadcast industry and guarantee that e-waste emanating from the process does not pollute the environment.
Responding, the Director General of NESREA, Professor Aliyu Jauro said the Agency was already implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Programme in the Electrical/ Electronics, Food and Beverages as well as Battery sectors in an effort to promote a circular economy.
He said the programme mandates producers, manufacturers, and importers to take charge of the waste from their products, adding that obsolete broadcast equipment is captured under the National Environmental, (Standards for Telecommunications/ Broadcasting Facilities) Regulations and the National Environmental (Electrical/ Electronic Sector) Regulations.
It was agreed that an Inter-Agency committee be set up to achieve the desired objective.
