Jack’s family have paid tribute to their “sweet, sweet boy”, who was at a friend’s house when he died in Pentwyn in the Penyrheol area of Caerphilly at around 4pm on Monday.

Emma Whitfield wrote: “With so much heart break, I have to announce our beautiful boy Jack was taken so tragically yesterday.

“It was not our dog nor did it happen at our family home. He was out to play.”

At the press conference, Chief Super Hobrough said that officers were not yet in a position to confirm what breed of dog the animal was.

He said: “It was a large and powerful dog. It was acting aggressively at the scene.”

He said that expert witnesses were being contacted and officers would be able to confirm the dog’s breed in due course.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing up to 12 police cars and four ambulances at the scene of an incident. The animal was subsequently shot dead at the scene.

There was a large police presence at the house on Tuesday morning and several houses cordoned off as officers controlled access to the scene.
