16 persons die in Lokoja-Okene road accident

Sixteen persons have lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Lokoja-Okene Highway in Kogi State.

The fatal crash occurred on Friday morning at Aku Village near Osara, according to the Kogi State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Lawal Fagge, said the accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BUU 17 ZD travelling from Jos, Plateau State, to Lagos with 22 passengers on board.

The FRSC attributed the crash to fatigue and excessive speed, which reportedly caused the driver to lose control before the vehicle veered off the road and plunged beneath a bridge.

A total of 16 occupants — 15 males and one female — were confirmed dead, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

FRSC rescue teams responded promptly to the scene and evacuated the injured victims to health facilities in Osara and the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, for treatment. The remains of the deceased were deposited at Ankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.

The Corps has urged motorists to avoid over-speeding, shun fatigue while driving, and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further road tragedies. (LAPAI TV)
