Shariah council condemns killing of 12 travellers in Plateau

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has strongly condemned the killing of 12 innocent law-abiding travellers from Kaduna State in Plateau State.

This is contained in a statement by Engr. AbdurRahman Hassan Secretary, SCSN Kaduna State, on Sunday.

The SCSN called on the government of Plateau State to fish out and deal decisively with the criminals behind the attack on the travelers, which left many others injured.

“The uncovering of atrocities committed on Muslim travelers in the Plateau are one too many. The Du Pond tragedy where innocent travelers are being waylaid and killed, most of whom are Muslims.

“The killing of Major General ldris Alkali (Rtd) is still fresh in our memories and still praying for justice. These barbaric acts should stop as they will not be tolerated,” the SCSN said.

“On June 21, 2025, a horrifying attack took place in Mangu Local Government of Plateau State, resulting in the killing of 12 innocent law-abiding travelers from Kaduna State and many sustained serious injuries.

“The Council strongly condemned this heinous cruelty, inhuman and uncivilized act of barbarism against these travelers.
Plateau State has historically been a flashpoint for ethnic and religious violence, primarily targeting Muslims.

These barbaric acts should stop as they will not be tolerated.

“We call on the government of Plateau State to fish out the criminals and deal with them decisively to serve as deterrent to others. We hope this incident will not be treated as the ones before it.

“We commend the Kaduna State government for the prompt release it issued on the matter, but it needs to go beyond that, even if it is litigation against Plateau State, so that diyyah will be paid to the families of the deceased and compensation to the injured.

“Our prayer is the Plateau State Government must do the needful in addressing the root causes of these conflicts, ensuring justice for the victims, as only through sustained efforts from both governmental and non-governmental entities can bring lasting peace in the Plateau troubled region.

“Lastly, we call on the citizens of Kaduna State to be law abiding, and not to take law into their own hands. May Allah repose the departed souls of the victims, and quick recovery for the injured.”
