Lalong leads screening of Jamila Malafa as INEC National Commissioner

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Electoral Matters and Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District, Simon Bako Lalong, today presided over the screening of retired Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq Malafa for appointment as National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), representing the North East geopolitical zone.

The nominee, who hails from Adamawa State, appeared before the Committee to answer questions bordering on her professional experience, integrity, understanding of Nigeria’s electoral laws, and her vision for strengthening the nation’s electoral process.

During the interactive session, Senator Lalong and members of the Committee engaged the nominee extensively on issues relating to electoral reforms, transparency, inclusivity, logistics management, and the role of technology in deepening credible elections across the country.

The Committee also sought her views on voter education, stakeholder collaboration, and safeguarding the independence of the electoral body.

Rear Admiral Malafa assured the Committee of her commitment to upholding the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the core values of transparency, neutrality, and professionalism in the discharge of her duties if confirmed.

After a thorough screening exercise, the Committee approved her nomination and resolved to present its report to the Senate for further legislative consideration and confirmation.

Senator Lalong reiterated the commitment of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters to ensuring that only qualified and competent individuals are recommended for positions within INEC, in order to sustain public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

Senator Lalong also received Hon. Pam Bot-Mang, Commissioner, Federal Character Commission who visited him to again register his appreciation for the role he played in his appointment, confirmation and inauguration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Senator representing Plateau Central Senatorial District Diket Plang also led members of the Mwaghavul Development Association who came to formally invite the former Governor to the annual cultural festival Puskaat 2026.
