P-square: Reactions trail Peter Okoye’s birthdate change

Music fans and followers of Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, one-half of the defunct P-Square duo, have continued to react to his decision to change his birthday celebration date.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the singer had in a recent post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle stated that he was officially changing his birth date from Nov.18 to 30.

According to the solo artist, he will no longer observe his birthday on the date he shares with his twin brother,Paul Okoye, amid their lingering rift.

He wrote: “Dear Family, Friends, and Fans,I’m making it official.November 18th is no longer my birthday celebration date.

“Please note that I will not be accepting any messages or gifts on that day.

“My birthday will now be celebrated on November 30th. This is a personal decision, and I truly appreciate your understanding. Thank you all”.

The statement has, however, stirred reactions on social media, especially from fans of the defunct P-square group who have been calling for their reconciliation.

@Djouno, on X app wrote, “Oga you just can’t wake up and change the date of your birth. Will you also change it on your passport and other documents? This is childish Abeg.”

A fan, @tjay_africa , writing on instagram, stated, “always proud of you”

Another instagram fan @donmention_ said, “happy birthday in advance November 30”

Expressing dismay at the development, @ritaberry_desserts wrote, “first in my bloodline to see a twin change date of his birth”.

@Raph_do2 said. “ I too love you.”.

@Anu, on X app (formally twitter) wrote, “I can understand sibling rivalry but twin rivalry that’s some crazy stuff!! You mean the one person in the world that should be your best friend is your sworn enemy”.

@cass milton said, “let him do surgery to change his face too”.

A Facebook fan @Adams Onche also stated, “if you like change am, twins na twins”.

@Ugochukwuinnocent_kelechi on Instagram said, “twins of particular  concern”,

@Official_djcora added, “until I see affidavit signed by court”.

@jiggayorr also commented, “you no go like change blood and surname too”?

However, an Instagram user @Juluxestores.ng said followers of the singer will still celebrate him on Nov 18, adding that “Nigerians go show this guy shege on the 18 just watch and see”.

NAN reports that the acclaimed P-square dominated African music space in the 2000s and early 2010s with several hits before internal disagreements led to their split.

Some of their  hit songs on global stage include “Beautiful Onyinye”,“Personally,” Bank Alert”,“Chop My Money,”, “Do Me” and “Alingo”.

The first crack in their relationship was in 2017, leading to a five-year separation, thereafter thrilled fans with a surprise reunion in November 2021.

However, the peace was short-lived as the group split for a second time in 2024,  following renewed disagreements involving their older brother and former manager, Jude Okoye, on allegations of financial  misappropriation.(NAN)
