CBN, NFIU strengthen collaboration on financial intelligence and AML/CFT Compliance

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, on Thursday, hosted the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, at the CBN Head Office in Abuja.

The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration between the two institutions in strengthening Nigeria’s financial intelligence system and regulatory coordination.

Discussions focused on enhancing information sharing, improving regulatory oversight, and supporting the sustained implementation of the country’s Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework.

Both the CBN and NFIU play central roles in safeguarding Nigeria’s financial system against illicit financial flows. The CBN oversees monetary and banking sector regulation, while the NFIU serves as the country’s financial intelligence hub, responsible for receiving, analyzing, and disseminating financial information to law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

Officials said the engagement underscores the commitment of both agencies to align policies and operations in line with international standards and to bolster Nigeria’s compliance with global AML/CFT requirements.

The visit comes amid continued efforts by the federal government to improve financial transparency, curb illicit flows, and strengthen confidence in the country’s financial sector.
