The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, on Friday led an INEC delegation to the International Election Observation Programme for South Korea’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections, holding from 29 May to 5 June 2026.

The programme, taking place in Seoul, brings together election management bodies, electoral experts and international observers from different countries.

The aim is to observe the conduct of local government elections in the Republic of Korea and exchange knowledge on best practices in election administration.

Prof. Amupitan was accompanied by National Commissioner Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed.

INEC said the delegation’s participation is expected to enhance the Commission’s understanding of emerging trends and global best practices in election administration, observation and electoral governance.

The South Korea local elections cover metropolitan councils, provincial councils, and heads of local government across the country, providing INEC officials an opportunity to benchmark processes ahead of Nigeria’s future electoral cycles.
