The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Kano Strategic Command has secured a 7-year prison sentence for a 28-year-old man who publicly advertised cannabis sativa for sale on social media.

The convict, Ashiru Idris, was arrested on 22nd April 2026 by operatives of the NDLEA Kano Command, acting on the directive of the State Commander, CN DY Lawal. His arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media showing him publicly promoting cannabis sativa for sale.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Media and Advocacy Officer, ASN Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the agency said Hon. Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court 1, Kano, convicted Ashiru Idris and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment without the option of fine.

The sentence is to run from the date of judgment, 14th July 2026.

The NDLEA described the judgment as a landmark decision and a strong deterrent to individuals who brazenly promote or engage in illicit drug trade on public platforms.

Commander Lawal said, “This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure offenders are brought to justice.”

The Command also commended the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), CON, OFR, for his support and guidance which have bolstered the command’s operations and successes in Kano.

The Agency urged families, community leaders, social media platforms and the general public to remain vigilant and support efforts to curb substance abuse.
