Anambra police rescue unconscious man suspected to be under drug influence

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued an unidentified middle-aged man who was found unconscious and allegedly under the influence of hard drugs in Awka.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, 16th July 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the victim was discovered on Tuesday, 15th July, by police officers attached to B Division during a midday patrol around Oby Okoli Avenue, near the UNIZIK Temporary Site, Awka.

Ikenga said the man was lying by the roadside with no visible signs of struggle or injuries suggestive of violence.

“Operatives immediately evacuated the victim to the Police Hospital in Awka, where he is currently receiving treatment,” the statement said.

A search conducted on the victim did not yield any means of identification or mobile phone that could help in tracing his identity or relatives. Preliminary assessment by medical personnel suggests the man may have been under the influence of hard drugs.

The Command said efforts are ongoing to identify the victim and notify his family members for further necessary action.

Ikenga described the incident as another reminder of the dangers of substance abuse and drug addiction, particularly among young people.

He reiterated that the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, POCACOV, remains committed to preventive policing through sustained advocacy, public enlightenment, and collaboration with stakeholders to discourage drug abuse, cultism, and other social vices.

The Command added that further developments on the matter would be communicated to the public in due course.
