The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Rabi Abubakar, for allegedly pouring boiled water on her pregnant co-wife, which led to the death of her newborn child in Daba Village, Bauchi LGA.
The suspect was arrested by operatives of ‘C’ Division, Tafawa Balewa Estate, after a report was received on 22nd July 2026 at about 8:00am from the Officer In-Charge, Dabe Police Outstation, Soro Division.
According to the Command, the incident occurred on 17th July, 2026 at about 7:30am when the suspect allegedly poured boiled water on her 30-year-old co-wife during a domestic dispute at their residence in Daba Village.
The victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH, Bauchi for treatment. While on admission and despite being heavily pregnant at the time of the assault, she gave birth to a baby boy on 19th July, 2026.
The newborn, however, had severe burn injuries and died on the same day. The victim is said to be stable and responding to treatment.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, said in a statement that upon receipt of the report, operatives visited the scene, traced and arrested the suspect.
“During preliminary interrogation, she voluntarily confessed to the commission of the offence,” the statement said.
The suspect is currently in custody and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Bauchi for discreet investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the act and assured members of the public that the Command will ensure diligent prosecution of the matter.
He also urged citizens to embrace peaceful resolution of disputes and to report cases of domestic violence to the Police for prompt intervention.
