The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, SCSN, has called on authorities to ensure strict adherence to the rule of law in the continued detention of Mallam Nasir Rufa’i, warning that any deviation could undermine public trust in state institutions.
In a press statement signed by Secretary General Nafiu Baba Ahmad, mni, the Council said every Nigerian, including Mallam El-Rufai, is entitled to constitutional rights and is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The Council expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s detention and what it described as the “apparent difficulty in meeting his bail conditions,” noting that such situations may be inconsistent with established legal procedures and constitutional safeguards.
“Nigeria operates under a constitutional democracy where the rights and liberties of all citizens must be respected, irrespective of status, political affiliation, or personal disposition,” the statement read. “The principles of due process, fair hearing, and lawful detention are not optional, but fundamental pillars of justice that must be upheld at all times.”
While stating that it does not support or condone criminality in any form, the SCSN stressed that “the pursuit of justice must itself be just.”
“Actions perceived as arbitrary, politically motivated, or inconsistent with the rule of law risk undermining public confidence in state institutions and eroding the very fabric of democratic governance,” the Council said.
It therefore urged relevant authorities to act strictly within the Constitution and extant laws, and to refrain from any action that may be perceived as politically motivated persecution.
“Nigeria’s unity and long-term stability are inextricably tied to the credibility of its institutions and the trust reposed in them by the citizenry. Justice must not only be done but must be manifestly seen to be done,” the statement added.
The Council reiterated its commitment to advocating for justice, protecting citizens’ rights, and fostering peaceful coexistence. It also called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and to act in accordance with the law.
