A 62-year-old Nigerian-American grandmother has landed in custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after carrying illicit drugs concealed as gifts from the United States.
The suspect, Anetor Gloria Ubong, a realtor based in Richmond, Texas, who holds both Nigerian and US passports, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
According to a statement in Sunday by NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, Ubong arrived on a United Airlines flight from Houston when officers searched her two checked-in boxes and uncovered 18 parcels of Loud, a high-grade synthetic cannabis, weighing 9.45kg.
The drugs were concealed with gift wrapping paper inside one of the boxes.
In her statement to operatives, the grandma claimed the box was delivered to her home in the US by her daughter and the daughter’s future brother-in-law, for onward delivery in Nigeria to her daughter’s fiancé, identified simply as Jibola.
The arrest has renewed NDLEA’s warning to travellers, especially those returning home for the Christmas season, to never carry luggage whose contents they did not personally pack, even when given by family members.
The agency said investigation into the grandma’s case is ongoing.
