The University of Abuja has had six substantive vice-chancellors since its establishment in 1988. They are:

Professor Isa B. Mohammed (1988 – 1998);

Professor Gambo Laraba (1999 – 2004);

Professor Nuhu O. Ya’qub (2004 – 2009);

Professor JSA Adelabu (2009 – 2014);

Professor Michael U. Adikwu (2014 – 2019),
