Alleged EFCC impersonation: Suspect to know fate June 15

Justice A. I. Akobi of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Kubwa, Abuja, has fixed June 15, 2026 for judgment in the trial of Salifu Olije Mustapha over alleged criminal impersonation of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, officers and extortion.

The judge gave the date on Monday, June 1, 2026, during proceedings where the EFCC presented its First Prosecution Witness, PW1, Stanley Ujilibo, an investigator with the Commission.

Ujilibo told the court that the EFCC received intelligence on how the defendant and two others — Haruna Mamuda Adamu and Abubakar Umar Hamisu — allegedly kitted themselves in fake EFCC operational uniforms. The two accomplices, he said, are currently under arrest and investigation by another security agency.

According to the witness, the trio used the defendant’s Toyota Corolla with registration number KTU-399-GT to extort money from unsuspecting youths around Sherif Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja on several occasions. He added that the defendant’s share of the proceeds was usually paid into his Moniepoint Microfinance Bank account, prompting EFCC investigators to obtain his account statement, account opening package, and certificate of identification from the bank.

Prosecution counsel, R.U. Adagba, tendered documents and video evidence recorded by eyewitnesses during one of the alleged unlawful activities. The court admitted them and marked them as Exhibit A to D.

Defence counsel, John Ainetor, prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable him review the evidence and cross-examine the witness.

Mustapha is being prosecuted by the EFCC on a four-count charge bordering on criminal impersonation. He pleaded guilty upon arraignment.

Justice Akobi adjourned the matter till June 15, 2026 for continuation of cross-examination and sentencing of the defendant.

EFCC has warned the public against impersonators, urging citizens to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be an officer and to report suspicious activities to the Commission.
