The Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI, OPHK, has cleared a Nigerien national previously intercepted by troops in Borno State, saying investigations found no links to terrorist groups.
The clarification was contained in a statement signed on Thursday by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI.
According to OPHK, the individual was intercepted on 14 July 2026 by troops of 68 Battalion during an exploitation operation following an attack at Cross Kauwa.
He was later identified as Aboubakar Muhammad Zein-Nur, also known as Houdairi.
Investigation and Findings
The military said due to the prevailing security situation and the use of border corridors by terrorists for movement and logistics, the individual was taken into custody for profiling and further investigation in line with operational procedures.
“Comprehensive intelligence assessments and other investigative processes did not establish that the individual has any affiliation to any known terrorist group,” the statement said.
OPHK added that investigations confirmed Zein-Nur is a resident of Shattu Anguba Village in Bosso, Republic of Niger, who engages in camel rearing beyond the River Komadougou.
“Operation HADIN KAI has consequently cleared the individual of any terrorist links,” Captain Goni stated.
The Theatre Command reiterated that all persons intercepted under suspicious circumstances during military operations are subjected to due process and appropriate security screening to distinguish innocent civilians from terrorist elements.
“Operation HADIN KAI remains resolute in denying terrorists freedom of action while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, respect for human rights, and the rule of law,” the statement added.
Cross Kauwa and other communities along the Lake Chad basin have been flashpoints of insurgent activity, with security forces intensifying patrols and exploitation operations to prevent infiltration through border routes.
OPHK said it will continue to balance operational effectiveness with respect for the rights of civilians in the North-East theatre.
