COAS ‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌seeks stronger diplomatic, military ties with Rwanda

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has called for stronger coordination between Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Rwanda and the military to advance bilateral defence cooperation.

Shaibu made the call during a courtesy visit to Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to Rwanda, Amb. Ibrahim Zanna, in Kigali, according to a statement by Col. Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations.

The visit formed part of Shaibu’s official working visit to Rwanda at the invitation of the Army Chief of Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force, Maj.-Gen. Vincent Nyakarundi.

The engagement highlighted the importance of diplomatic support in strengthening Nigeria’s defence relations and military cooperation with African partners.

The COAS said closer coordination between diplomatic and military institutions would support bilateral defence engagements, professional military exchanges and shared security priorities.

The army chief added that effective diplomatic–military cooperation was essential to sustaining strategic partnerships and aligning defence engagements with Nigeria’s foreign policy and national security objectives.

The visit also underscored the importance of whole-of-government cooperation in advancing Nigeria’s interests abroad and contributing to regional peace, stability and security across Africa. (NAN)
