Doyin Okupe apologises over comment on Igbo presidency

Nigerian politician Doyin Okupe has apologised over his comments listing how an Igbo presidency can be achieved in 2023.

Okupe, who served as former Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, had made his position known in a series of tweets.

He had said that an Igbo President can be achieved through a grand National Consensus on the project such as that which was enacted in 1999, when the two presidential candidates were Yoruba and when the core north forgives the Igbos for the killing of Sardauna of Sokoto by nigerian soldiers of igbo extraction in the 1966 Coup.

Dateline Nigeria reports that Okupe’s apology followed the backlash his comments generated.

In a tweet titled “Open apology to the Igbos ” Okupe said “I tender my unreserved appology to the Igbos and other Nigerians who felt offended by my post on Igbo presidency and the north.

“I never intended to hurt or demean the Igbos.:Instead I wanted to help actualise the dream. I regret the said post, and I am truly sorry.”
