DPO rejects N1m bribe, arrests kidnapper

The Kaduna State Police Command said its operatives have arrested a suspected kidnapper who reportedly offered a N1 million bribe to a DPO to compromise investigation.

The command’s spokesman, ASP Mansir Hassan, who confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday, said that the operatives attached to Tafa Division arrested the suspect and recovered a shared ransom.

Hassan explained that on January 19, at about 2200 hours, Tafa Division got information regarding the presence of a suspicious person in a hotel in Tafa town.

He said, “Operatives led by the DPO stormed the hotel and arrested one 28-year-old Bello Muhammad from Zamfara State and recovered N2.3m suspected to be proceeds of kidnapping.”

He said that during the course of investigation the suspect admitted to being a kidnapper who operated with his gang around Kagarko Forest in Kaduna.

The statement reads further: “The aforementioned sum is his own share of a ransom collected.”

He added that a check of his mobile phone corroborated the suspect’s confession as pictures of him brandishing an AK-47 rifle in a forest were retrieved.

He further said, “The said suspect offered a million-naira backhander to the DPO to stop him furthering
the investigation; which the police officer forthwith rejected.” (NAN)
