Dr. Mahmud Tukur: ‘We have lost one of our first and best intellectuals’

Dr. Mahmud Tukur, author of “Leadership and Values”, which to me is the most important book on leadership in Nigeria that I came across.

First VC of BUK and a minister during the GMB government of 1984-1985. Exceptionally bright and hardworking, well into his last day, you can say.

I met him during the The Buhari Organization project and kept consulting him on a number of issues. Intellectually, Dr. Tukur was someone I always looked up to…as a mentor. I always learned from him and even memorize some of his words for the wisdom they are cast in. It was not just the raw intellect, it was also the experience and the passion to ponder over our problems as a country at large and a region in particular. In this, there cannot be a second Mahmud.

My last meeting with him was after the 2011 election in his Ishaku Road office, Kaduna, when I consulted him on the hundreds of names I was suggested for a new online paper. He helped me narrow it down to five or so. It turned out to be one of the most successful online papers today by the hard work of its Editor-in-Chief.

My elder brother, Maigandi, looks so much like Dr. Tukur. The two look, think and behave remarkably alike.

Allah yafo.
