The FCT Police Command has rescued two newborn babies abandoned in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of the Federal Capital Territory on Wednesday, 2nd September 2026.
According to a press statement signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the first incident occurred at about 5:30 PM in Kurudu.
A resident, Mr. Innocent, told police at the Kurudu Division that he heard a baby’s cry around Obodo Street and discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in cloth and left inside a carton box.
Police officers from Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care, JWC, Department, were immediately deployed to the scene. The baby was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment. Police said the child is currently in stable condition.
Following necessary documentation, the baby was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care, while investigations into the circumstances of the abandonment have begun.
In a similar case later that evening, another resident, Mr. Ibrahim of Gwagwalada, reported at about 10:15 PM that he heard a baby crying outside his gate at around 9:40 PM.
He and other community members found a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned at the premises.
The JWC Department of Gwagwalada Division responded and took the baby girl to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination. She is currently receiving care before being handed over to the Social Welfare Department.
The Command said efforts are being intensified to unravel the circumstances surrounding both abandonments.
SP Adeh commended Mr. Innocent, Mr. Ibrahim and other community members for their prompt action in rescuing the children and alerting the police.
The Command is now appealing to members of the public with any information that could help identify the mothers or other family members of the abandoned babies to come forward.
