GIABA to strengthen regional collaboration against financial crimes

The Intergovernmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) is set to host a two-day stakeholders’ engagement in Dakar from July 6 to July 7 to strengthen regional collaboration against financial crimes.

The piece of information is in a statement issued by the GIABA Secretariat on Thursday.

The group stated that the programme would bring together ECOWAS ambassadors, diplomats, technical and financial partners, national authorities, Civil Society Organisations and media executives.

GIABA said the engagement would highlight its achievements in combating money laundering and financial terrorism across West Africa during the previous financial year.

The institution said July 6 would feature its annual briefing for ECOWAS ambassadors, technical and financial partners on regional anti-money laundering efforts.

GIABA would present its 2025 annual report, outlining progress, challenges and key developments in the fight against financial crimes.

The report presentation would be followed by a world press conference involving journalists from 12 ECOWAS member states and three Alliance of Sahel State countries.

On July 7, GIABA would train more than 40 journalists on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing issues.

The training would cover corruption, tax fraud, beneficial ownership transparency, emerging financial crime risks and the media’s role in public awareness.

GIABA said the activities would strengthen collaboration among diplomats, national authorities, development partners and the media in tackling financial crimes.

According to the institution, the engagement will improve stakeholders’ understanding of global developments in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing.

It said better-informed journalists would help to raise public awareness and encourage best practices that protect the region’s financial systems.

GIABA said the initiative reflect its commitment, alongside ECOWAS, to promoting financial integrity, peace and sustainable development across West Africa.

The institution said the activities aligned with its strategic plans, which promote stakeholder engagement through sustained information and communication programmes.

GIABA urged the public to access and read its 2025 annual report on the institution’s website. (NAN)
