Renowned Islamic scholar, Dr. Ahmad Gumi, has filed an application before the Upper Sharia Court in Kawo, Kaduna, seeking the issuance of criminal summons against Nasiru Musa Idris over alleged defamatory statements.
Idris had accused Gumi of keeping his estranged Moroccan wife, Khadija Diab, away from him for 11 months. A lawyer for Khadija Diab denied the allegation in a video shared widely on social media.
In the suit, marked Case No: 385/2026 and dated 8th September 2026, Dr. Gumi accused the defendant of granting interviews to multiple media houses, including Radio France International, RFI, where he allegedly made false and injurious allegations against the scholar.
According to court documents, the complainant stated that the defendant falsely alleged that: Dr. Gumi abducted his wife for over 11 months, forged a seal and stole his properties.
The application, filed by M. T. Mohammed & Co., Pinnacle Chambers, Kaduna, stated that the allegations were made “with a view to injure the reputation of the complainant and lower his esteem among the public and subject the complainant to ridicule.”
Dr. Gumi, described in the filing as “a well-respected Islamic Scholar from a responsible and well-known family,” noted that he is widely known among Islamic scholars and the public in and outside Nigeria, and that he teaches in many circles and attends to the needs of many Muslims.
The scholar is seeking redress under Section 137 and Section 138 of the Sharia Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2002, which deals with the offence of defamation.
As of press time, the court had not announced a date for hearing. The defendant had also not issued any public response to the allegations in the court filing.
