A man, Babangida Adamu, has narrated how his lost his teenage daughter Aisha in the Zakat distribution stampede in Bauchi State on Sunday.

Seven people have now reported dead in the crush, including an eight-year-old girl.

The victims were among those who thronged the office of a businessman AYM Shafa to collect N5,000.

Babangida Adamu spoke to the BBC, noting that his daughter had never attended such events before..

Adamu said “She has never attended such events before yesterday and she went with some people,” he said in a subdued voice on the phone from Bauchi.

“I was sitting when a girl came to me crying that I should rush to the hospital. On reaching there [I learned] my daughter has died. We buried her alongside other victims on Sunday.”

The businessman AYM Shafa, who organised the Zakat distribution in front of his office, is yet to comment on the incident.

The authorities have said they are now investigating what happened.

Women normally attend these types of events as men are often reluctant to be seen in places where charity handouts are being offered, BBC reported.
