How Kano police arrested 47 suspected yan daba, drug dealers in one week

The Kano State Police Command has arrested 47 suspects in a week-long intelligence-led crackdown on thuggery and drug peddling across the state, recovering large quantities of illicit drugs and dangerous weapons.

The operations, which took place between October 1 and 7, 2026, were ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, and in line with the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu’s vision of proactive, community-based policing.

The biggest haul was recorded by the Panshekara Division, where three separate operations led to the arrest of 21 suspected drug peddlers.

At about 6pm, operatives arrested two suspects, Abba Usman, 22, and Nasiru Hassan, 20, both of Panshekara Quarters, with six sachets and 12 pieces of Pregabalin capsules and dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa. The suspects have confessed to the crime, police said.

In a second operation at about 9pm, the division arrested 11 suspects led by Joel Munatuti, 21, of Samegu Quarters, recovering seven sachets of Pregabalin, 439 tablets of suspected Exol, five pieces of Diazepam and Cannabis Sativa.

Similarly, at about 10pm, eight suspects led by Kelvin Friday, 18, of Yansama Quarters, were arrested with six sachets of Pregabalin, 43 tablets of Exol and Cannabis Sativa.

In a related development, the Kiru Division on October 7 at about 3:30pm arrested one Sadam Shuaibu, 22, of Yako Village, with 105 wraps of Indian Hemp and other hard drugs.

The Command also recorded major breakthroughs against thuggery, popularly known as Yan Daba.

At Hotoro Mahautar Gabas, on October 4 at about 10:50pm, following reports of terrorizing residents, the Hotoro Division, reinforced by the Hotoro Area Command, arrested 13 suspected thugs.

Exhibits recovered include 216 bottles of ‘Suck and Die’ substance, six tubes of Red Sun Solution (Rubber Solution), four cutlasses, five axes, one sword, two Gariyo, four knives, one hammer, two hacksaws, five sticks known as Gora, three sharp iron rods, one MP3 radio, charms and four empty 4-litre gallons of ‘Suck and Die’.

Also, on October 3, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad arrested 10 suspected thugs at Yan Yashi/Kofar Ruwa axis in Dala LGA after receiving information from residents.

The suspects are Mohammed Usman, 30, Gaddafi Awaisu, 43, Abdulkarim Dalha, 22, Mustapha Isah, 19, Ibrahim Adam, 23, Abba Sale, 24, Ibrahim Rabi’u, 19, Abubakar Ibrahim, 24, Usman Hamisu, 25, and Ishimawi Sabo, 22. Swords, cutlasses, knives, clubs and illicit drugs were recovered.

In another breakthrough, the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) on October 4 arrested two suspected phone snatchers operating with a tricycle along Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

The suspects, Yaro Ahmad, 20, a.k.a Saisan of Goron Dutse and Nafiu Almustapha, 20, a.k.a Small of Dan-Dishe, confessed to dispossessing passengers through pickpocketing tricks. Three Android phones and one tricycle were recovered.

Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said all suspects are undergoing discreet investigation and will be charged to court.

The Commissioner of Police commended his officers and thanked members of the public for credible information, warning criminals to desist or face the full wrath of the law.
