IGP Disu: Ekiti governorship election will be peaceful, credible

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured residents of Ekiti State of adequate security and professional conduct by officers ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

Disu gave the assurance on Thursday, 21st May 2026, at the Election Stakeholders’ Meeting and Signing of the Peace Accord held in Ado-Ekiti. He said the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, had concluded comprehensive deployment plans to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible poll across the state.

The meeting brought together representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Peace Committee led by former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, political parties, candidates, traditional rulers, civil society groups, religious leaders, security agencies, and members of the diplomatic and observer community.

Commending INEC and the National Peace Committee for promoting peaceful democratic participation, the IGP particularly acknowledged Gen. Abubakar’s continued commitment to peace, national unity, and democratic stability.

Disu said operational strategies and deployment plans had been finalized for all 16 local government areas, 154 wards, and over 2,400 polling units in Ekiti State. Personnel and operational assets, he said, had been strategically positioned to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral officials, observers, and other participants.

“The Nigeria Police Force will remain professional and impartial throughout the election period,” the IGP stated. He urged political stakeholders to uphold the Peace Accord and conduct their activities peacefully, while encouraging Ekiti residents to exercise their constitutional rights without fear.

Disu reaffirmed the Force’s commitment, under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), to maintaining public order and protecting democratic values before, during, and after the election.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its pledge to ensure a secure environment for the election across the state.
