Impeachment of Zamfara deputy governor has no basis in law – Obi

The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 Nigerian general elections Peter Obi has extended his solidarity to the impeached Deputy Governor of Zamfara State Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau.

Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, spoke via his verified Twitter handle on Friday.

He said the impeachment has no basis in law “but is predicated only on toxic politics”.

“As someone who was wrongfully impeached and became the first Nigerian public officer to come back from impeachment, I can relate to this desecration of our constitutional democracy and offer my unalloyed support to him,” Obi tweeted.

Dateline Nigeria reports that Gusau was impeached on Wednesday by members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly shortly after receiving the report of the 7-man committee set up by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kulu Aliyu, to investigate the allegations against him.

The panel was led by Retired Justice Halidu Soba.
