Iyorchia Ayu: 5 things to know about new PDP chairman

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has a new national chairman in the person of Sen Iyorchia Ayu, who emerged unopposed, at the party’s national convention in Abuja.

Below are five things to know about the new chairman.

1. Indigene of Gboko, Benue State

Iyorchia Ayu was born in Gboko, Benue State on 15 November 1952.

2. Graduate of ABU Zaria

He is a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and has taught Sociology at the University of Jos, Plateau State

3. Former ASUU chairman University of Jos

He was once the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Jos

4. Impeached as Senate President

In 1992, he was elected as a senator under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and emerged Senate President in 1992. He was however impeached in November 1993.

5. Four times minister

He has held various ministerial appointments. He was Minister of Education between 1993 and 1998, as well as Minister of Industries from 1999 to 2001. He was Minister of Internal Affairs between June 2003 and June 2005, and Minister of Environment from June 2005 to December 2005.
