The Kano State Police Command has recorded major breakthroughs in the last 24 hours, with arrests of suspected armed robbers, interception of illegal firearms, and recovery of stolen livestock across the state.
The operations, carried out on Thursday, were in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention, according to a statement by the Command’s spokesperson CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.
In the first operation, operatives of Dorayi Babba Division intercepted illegal arms at Rijiyar Zaki Motor Park at about 2:30pm. Acting on information from a member of the public, police recovered one Tokarev pistol loaded with 48 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition from a suspicious parcel of luggage.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to buying the firearm and ammunition from another state and was transporting it to someone in a different state. Police said investigation is ongoing to track other accomplices in the illegal arms supply chain.
In a second operation, Rogo Police Division arrested five suspected armed robbers in Jajaye Village, Rogo LGA, also at about 2:30pm. The suspects are:
- Basiru Ibrahim, 25
- Saidu Madaki, 23
- Sa’adu Ibrahim, 25
- Lawan Yusuf, 24
- Muktar Salisu, 21 — all of the same address.
Preliminary investigation revealed the suspects were involved in four cases of criminal trespass, criminal conspiracy and armed robbery in Jajaye Village and environs, which left victims with various degrees of grievous injuries. They also confessed to stealing about five motorcycles and other valuable properties. They will be charged to court on completion of investigation.
In Gaya, police recovered one stolen cow and one ram and arrested two suspects. At about 6:30am, Hamisu Garba of Yanduji reported the theft of his cow. Later at 1:30pm, Maikudi Adamu of Jobe, Gaya reported the theft of his ram.
The patrol team intercepted Karimu Mamman and Madama, both of Jube Village, in possession of the animals. Further discreet investigation led to the arrest of two additional suspected syndicate members who have since been charged to court for prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, commended residents for their vigilance and timely information, and praised officers of Dorayi Babba, Rogo and Gaya Divisions for their professionalism and commitment.
“CP Bakori reiterates that the Command remains resolute in sustaining community policing, intelligence gathering, and inter-agency collaboration to ensure Kano State remains safe and secure for all residents,” the statement said.
