The State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, CN DY Lawal, received a courtesy visit from members of the IBB Way Nasiha Traders Multipurpose Cooperative Society led by Chairman Alh. Musa Zakari Shu’aibu Gwale, today, 30/07/2026.
The meeting focused on rising drug-related activities in and around IBB Way market and measures to protect the surrounding residential communities.
Chairman Gwale thanked Commander Lawal for the warm reception and described the visit as a constructive step toward finding lasting solutions to the increasing drug problem in the market area.
He informed the commander of steps already taken by the market committee to sanitize the environment, including the recruitment of special security marshals to deter illicit drug dealing and other social vices.
Gwale also outlined ongoing youth empowerment initiatives aimed at creating lawful livelihoods for young people and reducing their vulnerability to recruitment into drug-related activities.
In response, Commander Lawal reiterated that the NDLEA is committed to serving and protecting the people of Kano, calling the agency “their home” and underscoring that drug abuse is a primary enabler of virtually all crimes and social ills.
He stressed the importance of sustained cooperation between market leaders, residents and the NDLEA, and urged prompt sharing of actionable information to enable timely interventions.
The commander also emphasized that all candidates for the special marshals should undergo drug screening to ensure they are drug-free and not susceptible to compromise.
Both parties discussed practical ways to collaborate, including joint sensitization campaigns, regular information-sharing channels, capacity-building and training for the recruited marshals, and coordinated patrols around the market perimeter.
They agreed to maintain an open line of communication with the NDLEA to report suspicious activities and to explore further community-based strategies to keep the market and its environs safe.
The meeting closed with a renewed commitment from the market leadership and the NDLEA to work together to curb drug-related activities, protect youths and preserve the safety and wellbeing of residents in the IBB Way market area.
