With macroeconomic stabilisation providing a stronger foundation, Nigeria is turning its attention to the next phase of its economic agenda: strengthening financial markets, mobilising capital and creating conditions for sustainable growth.
This was the focus of separate bilateral meetings with senior International Monetary Fund, IMF, and World Bank leadership on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok on Monday, October 12, 2026.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Olayemi Cardoso, and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, met with IMF First Deputy Managing Director, Mr Dan Katz, and World Bank President, Mr Ajay Banga.
Discussions with the IMF centred on Nigeria’s macroeconomic outlook, policy priorities and opportunities for continued technical cooperation, while the World Bank engagement focused on development financing, private sector participation, infrastructure, digital transformation and financial inclusion.
For the CBN, the priority is increasingly about what greater macroeconomic stability can enable: a more resilient financial system, deeper and more efficient financial markets, stronger investor confidence and improved financial connectivity with the global economy.
The joint engagements also reflected closer fiscal-monetary policy coordination, with both institutions working within their respective mandates to support a more predictable economic environment.
Also in attendance was the CBN’s Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, Mr Philip Ikeazor, alongside senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Bank.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s next chapter is about building on stability to unlock the full potential of its financial system and support long-term economic growth.
