The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has officially declared open a 4-day specialized workshop on Campus Security Management (CSM) in Abuja.
Organized in collaboration with the International Academy for Gender and Peace (IAGP) and supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the training targets 600 Chief Security Officers (CSOs) from tertiary institutions across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Audi highlighted the rising cases of cultism, violent extremism, kidnapping, gender-based violence, cybercrime, drug abuse, and campus unrest as major threats to academic environments. He noted that several perpetrators of major crimes like banditry and kidnapping often initiate their criminal activities while on campus.
He charged the CSOs to remain vigilant, proactive, and committed to acquiring contemporary security knowledge to effectively safeguard lives, property, and human rights.
The Course Director and President of IAGP, Prof. Frederick Terhemba Tyoor, stated that the workshop aims to re-tool participants to reduce campus vulnerabilities and mitigate fear among students and staff. He emphasized the necessity of proactive intelligence generation and utilization to neutralize security risks before they manifest.
Representing the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Arc. Sunny Echono, PhD, Dr. Yusuf Gamawa reiterated the fund’s commitment to supporting initiatives that foster safe learning environments. A goodwill message was also delivered by Prof. Bilyaminu Suleiman Muhammed, Professor of Demography and Industrial Sociology at Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
The 4-day workshop features sessions facilitated by experts across academia and security agencies.
