Petrol tanker goes up in flames, razes shops, houses in Kogi

A petrol-laden tanker caught fire on Sunday in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, leading to the destruction of nearby houses and shops.

The tanker, which fell while trying to negotiate a bend on Ganaja/Ajaokuta road in Lokoja, spilled its content, with many rushing to scoop fuel despite the risk.

An eyewitness said no life was lost to the disaster.

The incident caused traffic standstill as fire fighters battled to put off the fire. Dateline Nigeria reports that the tanker which went up in flames in the afternoon was still burning as at 9.30pm.

The fire affected mostly people doing petrol trading, selling of firewood, charging of phones, tea vendors, POS, among others.

The state government and the police command have yet to comment officially on the accident.
