Police brutality: Kaduna inaugurates judicial commission

The Acting Governor of Kaduna State, Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, has inaugurated the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into acts of brutality by Police personnel in Kaduna State.

The event took place at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, on Monday, 19th October 2020. The commission is chaired by retired Justice David Shiri Wyom with retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Lawal Tanko, Civil society representatives Rebecca Sako-John and Mustapha Jumare.

Others are students representative Yakubu Umar Ibrahim, youths representative Nathaniel Sheyi Bagudu, representative of the National Human Rights Commission Inna Binta Audu, and acting Director, Citizens Right Department of the Ministry of Justice Hajara Abubakar, who represents the Attorney-General of Kaduna State.

She said the 36 state governors agreed at the last meeting of the National Economic Council to establish judicial commissions of inquiry into acts of police brutality in every state.

“Every state government is aware of the prevailing anomaly in policing: the deployment in all the states of police officers controlled by the Federal Government but whose operations are funded by state governments,” the acting governor added.

The commission is to Receive and investigate complaints of Police brutality or related extra judicial killings; Evaluate evidence presented/other surrounding circumstances, and draw conclusions as to the validity of the complaints; and Recommend compensation and other remedial measures, where appropriate.
