A police-led joint security team in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State has intercepted two vehicles and arrested nine suspects in connection with alleged illegal possession of firearms.
The operation was carried out in the early hours of Friday, 28th August 2026, at a checkpoint in Isuofia by the Joint Operation Base, Aguata, led by CSP Austin Elaigwu.
The Anambra State Police Command said the team, working in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, DSS, NSCDC, Nigeria Immigration Service, and operatives of the Agunechemba Security Outfit, intercepted a custom-coloured Toyota Sienna and an ash-coloured Toyota RAV4 during a stop-and-search operation.
In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu Anthony, a thorough search of the vehicles led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, charms and other items considered relevant to the investigation.
Nine suspects, comprising seven males and two females, were arrested and taken into custody alongside the recovered items.
According to the police, during preliminary interrogation, the suspects claimed to be security operatives based in a neighbouring state. However, they were unable to provide satisfactory explanations regarding their identities, affiliations, possession of the firearms and their purpose in Anambra State.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, commended the operatives for the successful operation.
He described the recovery as a result of intelligence-led policing and effective stop-and-search operations, and urged the team to remain vigilant.
The Command said investigation is ongoing to ascertain the true identities of the suspects and the intended use of the recovered weapons.
