Police order arrest, prosecution of scavengers in FCT

The Commissioner of Police FCT has given strict directives to all supervisory Police Officers to synergize with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board and other relevant agencies in order to rid the capital city of scavengers.

He has directed that they should be charged to court where arrested and their loots destroyed.

Dateline Nigeria reports that the FCT police had in March last year noted that intelligence at the disposal of the command showed that the activities of scavengers now spanned to criminal ventures like stealing, carjacking, housebreaking, arms smuggling and drug peddling among others.

Many have continued to react to the latest directive of the FCT police command.

Victor Ayodele said “They are everywhere and becoming more emboldened on a daily basis getting rid of them without another source of livelihood will be a really tough task.”

Others however asked what plans the Abuja Environmental Protection Board has for the scavengers. “Who are they, what percentage are citizens, legal immigrants and illegals? Are you just arresting because they are poor? That’s not a crime.”

Olayemi Popoola said “the FCT should create a dump site with restrictions for them , where they can scavenge scraps.”
