Seven people shot dead at oil plant in Imo

Police in Nigeria say seven people have been shot dead at an oil and gas facility in the south-east of the country.

Six of the dead were oil workers, the other a police officer.

It is not clear who carried out the attack at Assa in Imo state.

Assaults on energy facilities occur regularly in Nigeria, where local communities complain they do not benefit from oil and gas revenues.

On Monday, a new oil law was signed whereby companies are required to invest three percent of their operating expenses into community projects. (BBC)
