Uba Sani urges issues-based politics to deepen democracy

The Kaduna State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Nigerians to play issues based politics to deepen the country’s democracy.

Sani, who presently represents Kaduna Central in the Senate, said this on Sunday in his June 12 Democracy Day message.

He said, “Let me join lovers of democracy across the globe in congratulating Nigerians on the celebration of DEMOCRACY DAY. This is a special day set aside to celebrate and honour the memory of the irrepressible Chief Moshood Abiola, acclaimed winner of the 1993 Presidential Election, who laid down his life so that our democracy can grow and endure.

“Our dear President, Muhammadu Buhari deserves commendation for having the presence of mind and courage to change Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12. The new date is not only symbolic but sends a clear message to Nigerians that this democracy was watered with the blood, sweat and tears of many Nigerians and great sacrifices must be made to defend and protect it.

“On this day we must not fail to mention warriors of democracy like my mentor, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi and Dr. Beko Ransome Kuti who made enormous sacrifices in the promotion and defence of democracy.

“We must strive to relive June 12 by bringing Issues Based Politics to the front burner of national politics. June 12 is about seeing Nigeria as your constituency. It is about deemphasizing ethnic, regional and religious politics. It is about building bridges across Nigeria. It is about checkmating agents of destabilization. Yes, June 12 is about forging the Nigerian Spirit.

“As we approach the 2023 elections, I urge politicians to play by the rules. We must maintain fidelity to the rule of law and due process. Circumventing of the rules and desperate acts will imperil this democracy and damage the unity of our country. There would be no beneficiaries. We shall all be casualties.

“The Nigerian people have shown faith in this democracy. Leaders must reciprocate by working around the clock to deliver dividends of democracy to our people. Our people deserve services and protection to strengthen their faith in our country and democracy.

“Let this year’s Democracy Day serve as a wake up call for all of us. We must nourish this democracy, protect and defend it through our actions. If we lower our guards the consequences will be unpleasant.”
