Vigilante members recover 500 cattle from bandits in Sokoto

  • Clear Sokoto-Gusau highway for motorists

Members of vigilante groups and hunters in Sokoto have recovered hundreds of cattle rustled by bandits.

Motorists and passengers told Dateline Nigeria that over 500 stolen cattle were recovered from the bandits at the notorious Dogon Awo bush along Sokoto-Gusau highway today (Monday).

“The development angered the bandits who blocked a section of the highway trying to kidnap passengers,” one of the trapped motorists said.

Vigilante members escort motorists along Sokoto-Gusau highway after clearing the portion of the road of a group of armed bandits who blocked it around 12pm.

But the vigilante members, who were almost arriving Sokoto town, regrouped and confronted the bandits and cleared the road.

“The bandits were forced to flee by the vigilantes and at least four motorcycles were abandoned by the gunmen,” said another motorist who was travelling to Gusau when the incident happened.

Dateline Nigeria reports the incident is coming two days after bandits abducted over 50 wedding guests travelling between Tureta-Bakura on Saturday along the Sokoto-Zamfara road.

Those abducted, according to sources, were telephone marketers at the popular Bebeji Plaza in Gusau who were returning to Gusau after attending a wedding of their colleague in Sokoto State.
