A 25-year-old suspect, Maimunatu Idris, has told police that jealousy and heartbreak pushed her to cut her boyfriend’s manhood at a hotel in Kano, after she discovered he was planning to marry another woman.
Maimunatu, from Maigatari LGA in Jigawa State, was arrested by the Kano State Police Command following the incident at Durbar Hotel on Ahmadu Bello Way on July 27, 2026.
The victim was rushed to Abubakar Imam Urology Hospital where he is receiving treatment. Police recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack.
Speaking to investigators, Maimunatu said she and the man had been in a relationship for six years. According to her, they had even set a wedding date, but the plan was later canceled.
“He told me he would not let me marry anyone else. Because of that, I ended an engagement with another man,” she said. “But later I found out he was planning to marry another woman.”
She said she came to Kano to attend an event and used the opportunity to meet him. After listening to voice messages on his phone that upset her, she said she attacked him while he was asleep.
“I was angry and I felt betrayed. I regret what I did,” Maimunatu told police.
The victim’s brother said their family had not supported the relationship from the start and urged authorities to ensure justice is served.
Confirming the arrest, the Kano Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said investigation is ongoing. He added that the suspect will be arraigned in court on charges of attempted culpable homicide at the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has warned the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force is constitutionally empowered to investigate and prosecute offenders through due process.
