11 things to know about deceased DIG Egbunike

As Nigerians continue to react to the death of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Joseph Obiajulu Egbunike, Dateline Nigeria chronicles 10 things about the deceased police officer.

1. Egbunike was in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID)

2. He headed the Special Investigation Panel set up by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, to investigate money laundering allegations against DCP Abba Kyari.

3. He graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with B.sc (Hons) Accounting, he also had a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons.), B.L and a Masters in International Law and Diplomacy (MILD) and PhD in Criminology.

4. At the Nigeria Police Mortgage Bank Plc, he represented the NPF Accounts & Budget and also sat on the Board of Nigeria Police Force Property Development & Construction Company Ltd.         

5. He attended the Advanced Detective Course, CSP – ACP and ACP – DCP Promotion courses, Police Staff College Jos, Plateau State amongst other local and international professional courses.

6. He was a former Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Department of Finance And Administration); Commissioner of Police,  Account and Budget; Secretary, Force Headquarters Purchasing and Tenders Board

7. He was a Member of Federal Government Losses Committee; the Accountant of Nigeria Police Cooperative Multi-Purpose Society Limited.

8. He was at various times 2i/c State Intelligence Officer, Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) Central Police Station, Onitsha; Patrol and Guard Officer, Ogidi, all in Anambra State Police Command, Divisional Traffic Officer, Abakpa-Nike; General Investigation, State CID, Enugu State.

9. He was Account Bills Officer, Group Accounts Division, (GAD), NNPC Headquarters, Falomo, Lagos during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

10. He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); Association of National Accountant of Nigeria (ANAN); Nigeria Bar Association (NBA); Member, Institute of Cost Management (ICM); Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM); and Member, Chartered Institute of Fraud Examiners.

11. He is survived by a wife and children.
