
The Ado-Ekiti Custodial Centre witnessed scenes of joy, relief, and renewed hope as 57 inmates regained their freedom following a jail delivery exercise conducted by the Ekiti State Judiciary.
The exercise was led by the Honourable Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Hon. Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, who visited accompanied by other judicial officers, to review pending cases and address the challenge of custodial congestion.
In the course of the exercise, a total of 590 cases were reviewed. The Chief Judge granted bail to six inmates, discharged nine inmates for lack of evidence, and ordered the unconditional release of 42 others.
Justice Ogunmoye commended officers and personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service for their dedication in ensuring the regular production of inmates in court and urged them to sustain the commitment in the interest of justice administration.
In her welcome address, the Controller of Corrections, Ekiti State Command, Oluremi Christy Okuseinde, expressed appreciation to the Ekiti State Judiciary, particularly the Honourable Chief Judge, as well as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata, SAN, for their consistency in conducting jail delivery exercises. She noted that such interventions have continued to bring significant relief to inmates and contribute meaningfully to the decongestion of the custodial centre.
The Controller called for strengthened inter-institutional collaboration to further streamline judicial processes in the state.
She reaffirmed the Command’s commitment, under the leadership of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, to the safe custody, reformation, and rehabilitation of inmates in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act.
The exercise was attended by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata, SAN, High Court Judges, Magistrates, the State Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Julius Ajibare, and other key stakeholders in the justice sector.
