NCoS congratulates Jamiu, UNODC on victory at UN chess tournament

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) heartily felicitates Jamiu, as well as Mr. Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess in Slums Africa, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Nigeria, on the remarkable emergence of Jamiu as the Chess Champion at the 2025 United Nations Games Chess Tournament.

Jamiu’s inspiring journey from a modest background to international acclaim is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and purposeful engagement.

Having been introduced to the game through the “Chess in Slums Africa” initiative, Jamiu rose through the ranks under the dedicated mentorship of Mr. Onakoya.

His recent triumph, clinching a gold medal after a compelling endgame victory against a Russian opponent, underscores the boundless abilities inherent in individuals, regardless of circumstance.

This achievement resonates deeply with the philosophy and ongoing reformatory efforts of the Nigerian Correctional Service, particularly in deploying the game of chess as a rehabilitation tool in the custodial centres.

The introduction of chess as a reformatory tool in NCoS centres has continued to provide inmates with the opportunity to develop critical thinking, emotional discipline, and a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

The Service commends the collaborative efforts of Chess in Slums Africa, UNODC Nigeria, and all stakeholders whose vision and support made this milestone possible. It is a compelling reminder that rehabilitation and reintegration are achievable through strategic partnerships and inclusive empowerment programmes.

Congratulations, Jamiu, UNODC Nigeria, U.S. Department of State: Bureau of Intl Narcotics & Law Enforcement (INL) for the initiative and Support.
