The Independent National Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of National Youth Service Corps members to be deployed for the February 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for the FCT, Aminu Kasimu Idris, gave the assurance on Friday during a visit to the FCT Coordinator of the NYSC, Samson Ateli, as preparations for the polls gather momentum.
Idris said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between INEC and the NYSC to ensure the successful conduct of the elections, stressing that the welfare of corps members remained a top priority for the commission.
According to him, the engagement provided an opportunity to advance discussions on the numerical strength of corps members required, deployment strategies, security arrangements and other critical areas of partnership necessary for a credible election.
The REC commended the NYSC for its contributions to national development, noting that the long-standing partnership between INEC and the scheme had played a significant role in improving Nigeria’s electoral process over the years.
In his response, Ateli thanked the REC and his delegation for the visit and described the memorandum of understanding between INEC and the NYSC as instrumental to the conduct of credible elections in the country.
He emphasised the importance of adequate training and robust security plans for corps members during election duties, while assuring INEC of the availability of sufficient personnel and the continued support of the NYSC to ensure a successful Area Council election in the FCT.
