FG advances Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences

The Federal Government has advanced plans to establish the Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences (AFCOM&HS) as a strategic intervention to strengthen military healthcare services and expand national medical training capacity.

The initiative was progressed at a high-level meeting led by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, and defence leadership including the Minister of Defence.

The proposed College, to be established within the framework of the Nigerian Defence Academy, aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and supports ongoing expansion of medical education nationwide.

With Nigeria facing significant shortages in medical personnel, the College will build a structured pipeline of combat casualty-trained doctors, trauma specialists, emergency response medics, and allied health professionals for the Armed Forces.

Admissions will be conducted through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, with graduates commissioned as Captains upon completion.

A Technical Working Group comprising regulatory bodies and defence stakeholders has been constituted to ensure full compliance and accreditation, with admissions projected to commence by October/November 2026.

The initiative represents a strategic investment in national health security and military readiness.
