Goron Dutse inmates defeat NDLEA officials in friendly tug-of-war contest

Inmates at the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre in Kano State recorded a morale-boosting victory over officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during a friendly tug of war contest organized as part of ongoing recreational and rehabilitation activities.

The event, held within the custodial facility, was jointly organized by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the NDLEA Kano State Command. It forms part of sustained efforts to reform, rebrand, and reposition inmates toward becoming responsible members of society, in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.

Speaking after the match, the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, fsi, expressed appreciation to the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, for his commitment to engaging inmates in meaningful recreational and rehabilitative programmes across custodial centres nationwide.

Controller Lakpene also commended the NDLEA Kano State Commander, Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, for the agency’s collaboration, particularly in sensitizing inmates on the dangers of drug abuse. He emphasized that the synergy between the NCoS and NDLEA reflects their shared mandate of reforming, rehabilitating, and reintegrating inmates into society.

The highlight of the event was the tug of war contest, where the inmates emerged victorious over the NDLEA officials, demonstrating teamwork, resilience, and improved physical well-being.

In recognition of their performance, the NDLEA Commander, Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, presented a cash gift of One Hundred Thousand Naira (₦100,000) to the inmates and encouraged them to remain committed to self-improvement. Additionally, the Controller of Corrections, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, fsi, donated a separate sum to support inmate welfare.

The Nigerian Correctional Service reiterates its commitment to implementing reformative programmes that promote discipline, physical fitness, and the successful reintegration of inmates into society.
