FG launches education data infrastructure to track learners, cut out-of-school numbers

The Federal Government has unveiled the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), a new technology-driven platform aimed at transforming education planning, improving learner tracking, and reducing the number of out-of-school children nationwide.

The platform was launched on Wednesday, May 14, 2026, at the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on NEDI in Abuja.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described NEDI as a landmark reform that will give Nigeria a unified and credible national education data system. He said the cloud-based, AI-enabled platform will integrate data from basic, secondary, technical, vocational, and tertiary institutions, as well as agencies including JAMB, WAEC, NECO, and NELFUND, to serve as a single source of truth for the sector.

According to Alausa, NEDI’s National Learner Identity Number, linked to the National Identity Number, will allow authorities to track learners from enrolment through to employment. The system is also designed to curb identity fraud, examination malpractice, and the operation of “miracle centres.”

The minister disclosed that over 32 million learners and more than 220,000 schools across 21 states have already been captured on the platform.

The Federal Government said the initiative reaffirms its commitment to using technology and credible data to build a transparent, inclusive, and globally competitive education system.

The statement was signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education.
