Police arrest 40-year-old suspect over Creek town killings in Cross River

  • Suspect allegedly confesses to murdering two men in revenge for 29-year-old communal crisis

The Cross River State Police Command says investigations are ongoing into alleged murder incidents at Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area, with a 40-year-old man in custody over the killings.

According to a press statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the suspect, identified as Akaninyine Eretus, is currently assisting investigators.

Police said that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to killing two persons identified as Okokon and Okon on 24 and 25 May 2026 respectively. The command said he claimed one victim was killed while asleep and the second was attacked with a machete.

The suspect reportedly told police his actions were motivated by a desire to avenge the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers during a communal crisis in the area about 29 years ago.

Two bodies believed to be those of the victims have been recovered and deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy, the Command said.

“The Command emphasizes that the suspect’s statements remain subject to thorough investigation and verification,” the statement noted.

Police urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, rumors or messages that could compromise the investigation or cause tension in the community. Residents were advised to rely only on official updates from the Cross River State Police Command.

The Command said investigations remain ongoing and further developments will be communicated as they unfold.
