After 17 years of phone-number-only contact, WhatsApp is rolling out usernames to let users chat without handing out your digits. Usernames are also expected to go live later this year.
Here’s what’s happening and how to grab yours.
1. What WhatsApp usernames actually are
Usernames are unique handles, like @BenMal or @DDDBank, that you can use instead of your phone number to connect on WhatsApp.
Your phone number is still required to create and use an account — usernames don’t replace it for sign-up. Think of it as a privacy layer: new contacts can message you via your username, while your phone number stays hidden.
2. Why Meta is doing this
With 3+ billion users, sharing phone numbers “can feel like a big step”. Usernames let you chat with classmates, neighbors, buyers, or join groups without revealing personal info tied to “so many parts of your life”.
It also matches competitors like Signal and moves WhatsApp closer to Instagram/Facebook-style identity.
3. How it works: key details
You can keep using phone numbers only. Usernames are an “optional privacy feature”. There’s also no public search or suggestions. Someone needs your exact username to message you first.
For extra spam control, you can enable an optional 4-digit “username key.” Anyone messaging you via username for the first time must enter it. You can also join groups with just a username, hiding your number from other participants.
You can change or remove your username later.
4. Rules for picking a username
WhatsApp is strict to prevent impersonation and confusion:
- Length: 3–35 characters
- Characters allowed: Lowercase letters a–z, numbers 0–9, periods
.and underscores_ - Must include at least one letter — numbers/symbols only not allowed
- Can’t start with “www.”
- Can’t end with domains http://like.com http://or.net
- No consecutive periods, can’t start/end with a period
- Must be unique — if someone claims it first, it’s gone
5. How to reserve yours
Reservations opened this week and are rolling out gradually. To reserve a username, follow the steps below:
- Update to the latest WhatsApp
- Go to Settings > Account > Username
- Enter your desired username or choose Use Instagram/Facebook username if you’re a creator/business
- WhatsApp checks availability and confirms
Note that brands and creators can claim their existing Instagram or Facebook username for consistency. Meta is also reserving high-profile usernames and protecting them permanently to prevent impersonation.
